JASNA SW Florida Zoom Event on June 12, 2021

JASNA SW Florida cordially invites you to their presentation, “Comparing Scenes From Four Productions of Sense and Sensibility.” The event is being held on Zoom on June 12, 2021 from 1PM – 3PM.

The presentation will be comparing four productions of the book. Attendees do not need to watch the movies beforehand as they will present each video clip.

The four productions are 1971, 1981, 1995, and 2008.

The 2021 Jane Austen Fashion Challenge

With the uncertainty of whether the 2021 Jane Austen festival will be in person or virtual, the organizers have put together a fun challenge!

If you’re feeling inspired by the clothing and accessories of Jane Austen’s time or desired something from an Austen adaptation,  and you’ve gone on to recreate an outfit or felt motivation to create one of your own designs, the Jane Austen Festival Committee has something for you.

Recreate an outfit (or accessory such as a bonnet or reticule) from Austen’s time period and document the process, including notes on fabrics, patterns used, source materials, or fashion plate. Then include a short video or an image of the creation worn by you for the committee members to use on social media. Email everything to Hannah at Locust Grove (marketing@locustgrove.org) by June 18!

The 2021 North America Jane Austen Festival July 9 – 11, 2021

Historic Locust Grover is proud to present the 2021 Jane Austen Festival in Louisville, KY. This year’s theme is Race, Power & The Arts in Jane Austen’s World: How did the ideas of contemporary society influence Jane Austen’s work?

The event is scheduled to be held July 9 – 11, 2021.

Due to COVID-19, the organizers have confirmed there will be a virtual component to the festival but the in-person activities are still under consideration. A full announcement will be made on or before May 31, 2021.

Registration will open the week of June 7 and is as follows:

  • Virtual Two-Day | $18
  • Virtual Saturday | $10
  • Virtual Sunday | $10

The virtual pass will include all the speakers and Q&As across the weekend while the one day passes are valid for that day.

Content will be available from July 5 to July 31.

Jane Austen and Bronte Online Classes at Oxford

The University of Oxford  Continuing Ed is a fabulous place for superior online learning. I’m taking Who are the Celts? this term and I am loving it. Last term I took Britons in a Roman World and enjoyed the pace, learning, and interaction with the tutors.

I can say then, with great confidence, I am highly recommending Oxford’s ContEd Austen and Bronte classes:

Classes run about £312.00 GBP (about $450 USD) for the term. You can pay an additional fee of £10 to get certified for CATS points allowing the course to be counted towards a degree in the UK, including Oxford. I’m coughing up the extra £10 because you never know when I may want a fourth master’s.

If you are interested in the classes, I do suggest you sign up ASAP. Class size is limited to about 25 students. Even though the class is online, you have direct interaction with the tutor and other students so it feels like just like you’re in a regular classroom.

And I’m not going to shy away from whether you’re taking the class for pass/fail or auditing, there WILL BE homework. For my current class, they suggested 10 hours a week of study. I thought they were joking. They were not.

Again, highly, highly recommend these courses. If you do take one, leave a note in the comments!

Bronte Parsonage Museum Set to Re-open May 19th

With COVID days finally, hopefully, in the rearview mirror, the Bronte Parsonage Museum is thrilled to announce they are re-opening up on May 19 at 10AM BST.

The gift shop is already open from 10AM – 5P and you can also shop online.

Entrance to the museum is by ticket only and staggered throughout the day on a timed-entry with a limit of the number of people. This is to keep in line with current regulations for health measures and social distancing.  If you have an existing pass or a member of the museum, you still must order a ticket.

Publication & Prejudice: An Online Exhibit

Publication & Prejudice is an online exhibit curated by Emma Brodey (Class of ’21) for the Yale Beinecke Library. The exhibit presents the world of P+P via 20 different publications of the novel that include pastiches and reminagingings. While the story remains more or less the same, the different versions prevent a holistic view of the editors, or writers, interpretation of the original. Sometimes all it takes is a different edit to convey the same scene in a wholly new way.

The exhibit contains everything from the power of the ampersand to misplaced manuscripts. There is also more nuanced information on AUsten and her world.

The exhibition is free.

JASNA’s Annual Student Essay Contest 2021

The annual JASNA Student Essay Contest is now open with entries due by June 1.

The contest is open to high school, college, and graduate students.

This year’s theme, “Jane Austen in the Arts,” is based on the theme for this years AGM. “Arts” is encompassing including fine art, performative art, crafts, and decorative arts.

From the website:

Jane Austen played the piano, embroidered, and attended art exhibits and the theater. The arts also played a role in her novels. In your essay, discuss how Austen uses the arts, whether to reveal character, address social standing, advance the plot, or otherwise make a point. High school students: you may discuss her use of the arts in just one of her novels, though you are welcome to refer to more. Undergraduate and graduate students: you must discuss Austen’s use of the arts in more than one novel. You may use the same art form in each or contrast different arts.

The organizers consider it essential to read the submissions page before submitting

Each division has three winning places with:

  • First Place:  $1,000 scholarship and free registration and two nights’ lodging for JASNA’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (Transportation to the conference is not provided.)
  • Second Place:  $500 scholarship
  • Third Place:  $250 scholarship

Each winner receives a set of Norton Critical Editions of Austen’s work.

All winners and their mentors receive a one years membership to JASNA.
